SHELVEY’S LATE STUNNER EARNS NEWCASTLE A DRAW AGAINST CITY Manchester City’s hopes of defending their Premier League title were dealt another blow when Jonjo Shelvey’s stunning late equaliser earned Newcastle a point at St James’ Park. Pep Guardiola must have thought his side had won it when Kevin de Bruyne found the net in the 82nd minute with a brilliant long-range effort which went in off the crossbar. But with two minutes of normal time remaining substitute Christian Atsu pulled the ball back for his team-mate Shelvey, who beat the dive of Ederson with his strike. That is now 13 points dropped by Pep Guardiola’s side who are eight behind Liverpool before the leaders host Brighton at 15:00 GMT. It all began well for City when they took the lead after an early period of dominance. BALE RETURNS TO STARTING XI AS REAL WIN TO GO TOP Gareth Bale made his first Real Madrid start since 5 October as Zinedine Zidane’s side moved top of La Liga with victory at Alaves. Real captain Sergio Ramos opened the scoring with a flicked header 10 minutes into the second half. Lucas Perez equalised from the penalty spot, but Dani Carvajal bundled home from close range to earn Real the win. Barcelona will return to the top of the table if they beat Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Real produced one of their best performances of the campaign  against Paris St-Germain on Tuesday  but lacked intensity at the Mendizorrotza Stadium, struggling to create clear-cut opportunities in a frustrating first half. Bale went closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time, heading Isco’s cross on to the post via a heavy deflection off Ximo Navarro. Ramos eventually nodded the visitors into the lead from Toni Kroos’ delivery, but the Real skipper conceded a penalty when he c

RELIC TO RETURN TO BETHLEHEM IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS A fragment of wood believed to have formed part of Jesus’ manger is set to be returned to Bethlehem after more than 1,000 years in Europe. Pope Francis ordered the return of the thumb-sized relic from Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore as a gift. The relic had been in Rome since the 7th Century. It was briefly put on display in Jerusalem before continuing its journey to Bethlehem to coincide with the start of Christmas celebrations there. Officials said it would now be kept in the Franciscan Church of St Catherine, next to the Church of the Nativity, where tradition says Jesus was born. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE RELIC? Christians believe the tiny piece of wood formed part of the crib that Jesus lay in after being born. Custodia Terrae Sanctae, the custodian of Catholic religious sites in the Holy Land, said  the Patriarch of Jerusalem, St Sophronius, donated the relic to Pope Theodore I in the 7th Century. I

Khan, 28, was out on licence from prison when  he killed two people and injured three others in the stabbing attack on Friday , before he was shot dead by armed police. He had been living in Stafford, wearing a tag, since being released in December 2018. This sentence would have allowed him to be kept in prison beyond the minimum term. But  in 2013 the Court of Appeal quashed the sentence, replacing it with a 16-year-fixed term  of which Khan should serve half in prison. Born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, Khan was originally jailed along with eight others, who were arrested in 2010. The nine, inspired by al-Qaeda, had been under surveillance by MI5. The men – w
